A personal pepperoni pizza, ranch, and a blue Gatorade can apparently lead to a conversation about grief, comedy burnout, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and hypothetical cannibalism. That is the charm of Snackin’ & Yakkin’ with BIG Ben Kennedy.

In Episode 64, Charleston comedian Sara Meagan returns for a loose, funny, and occasionally dark chat that goes wherever the snack table takes it.

A Snack Break That Goes Everywhere

Sara and Ben recently shared a show at Social 19 in West Ashley with Apples, Bill Davis and other familiar faces from the show. Social 19 earned high marks for its friendly service, food and drinks, nightclub-style setup, and golf simulator. Ben tried the simulator and learned that real golf may not be his calling.

For the episode, Sara requested Parkers, the South Carolina gas station known for hot, ready-to-eat food. Her preferred pepperoni roll was unavailable, so Ben arrived with personal pepperoni pizzas instead, which Sara described as basically an unrolled pepperoni roll.

Ranch became a necessary pizza sidekick, especially with a hangover in the mix. Sara paired her food with blue Gatorade, then launched the important question: why are there so many blue flavors when they all seem to taste like some variation of blue raspberry, grape, cherry, or sports-drink mystery?

The snacks also brought up movie theater food. Sara’s hometown theater has pizza, chicken fingers, beer, and seat-side food delivery. She and Ben planned to see the new Spider-Man movie without the moving-seat experience, since vertigo and vibrating chairs don’t make a great double feature.

The Fast Five Has Strong Opinions

The show’s quick-fire snack questions became a compact tour of Sara’s food preferences.

  1. Pretzels beat popcorn because popcorn gets stuck in her teeth. Soft pretzels, pretzel nuggets, mustard, and cheese all got a vote, although popcorn earned credit as the healthier choice.
  2. Vanilla beat chocolate for both hosts. Vanilla works as a sweet blank canvas for birthday cake flavors and other additions, while chocolate tends to take over the whole party.
  3. Sara picked Papa John’s when given the full pizza-chain field. Between Pizza Hut and Domino’s, though, Pizza Hut won for stuffed crust, buffet nostalgia, and memories of an era when people could smoke inside a restaurant.
  4. Snack cravings depend on the day. Sara likes salty food, while Ben backs the sweet-and-salty lane, including caramel Chex Mix with pretzels and peanut M&M’s.
  5. Sara passed on sweet tea, especially sweet tea with lemon, and chose Cheerwine instead. She also enjoys a blue sports-drink cocktail, because apparently hydration and a buzz can share a glass.

Comedy Needs Room to Breathe

Sara stepped away from comedy for about six months after feeling overwhelmed by life and the scene’s personalities. Comedy is a passion, she explained, but it isn’t her only priority. When performing stopped feeling therapeutic, taking a break made more sense than forcing herself onstage while unhappy.

It is okay to step away from something you love when it stops feeling healthy.

That perspective shapes Sara’s work now. Her monthly Hot Mess showcase gives comedians she believes in a chance to perform while keeping the mood loose and fun. She has creative freedom with the show, and the name fits because, in Sara’s words, everybody is a hot mess in some form.

She also hosts a comedy writing group every other Sunday at 1 p.m. The group rotates among local spots such as Reggie’s, Gene’s, and The Knot Burger Pub in Summerville. Comics bring fresh ideas, rework existing bits, and sharpen punch lines without the pressure of a live audience.

Dale Earnhardt, Family Comedy, and the Dark Turns

One of Sara’s favorite bits came from a jacket and a misunderstanding. While dating a Colombian man, she mentioned putting on her Dale Earnhardt Jr. coat. He thought she meant Amelia Earhart, creating a confusing and hilarious Dale Earnhardt Jr. vs. Amelia Earhart exchange that became part of her act.

Sara grew up moving often because her father was in the Army. Ben also changed schools frequently while growing up around Baltimore. Both saw the upside later in life: moving taught them to make friends quickly and talk to all kinds of people.

Sara’s partner, TJ, supports her comedy by attending shows, open mics, and writing groups. He also has a sharp radar for people, which Sara trusts more than her own first impressions. They spend plenty of time together, yet they also understand the value of an occasional break from each other’s noises, habits, and farts.

The conversation got more serious when Ben discussed family tragedy and the strange experience of seeing true crime treated as entertainment. Both hosts landed on the idea that some emotional wounds never disappear. You can work through them without pretending they never happened.

Then, because this is Snackin’ & Yakkin’, the topic took a hard left into cannibalism jokes and the logistics of eating a human leg. That portion is dark humor, not a dinner recommendation.

Sara Meagan brings honesty, sharp jokes, and a willingness to follow any conversational rabbit hole, even when it ends at a fictional barbecue. Find her comedy updates on Sara Meagan’s Instagram at @sara.meagan.has.legs, and watch more episodes on the Snackin’ & Yakkin’ YouTube channel.

The episode’s best lesson may be simple: bring snacks, tell the truth, and keep enough ranch nearby for whatever gets dry.
